Tranquil, from the specimen trees and shrubs reflected in the water; Vibrant from the hot, South African summer garden, and a sense of the Mysterious, from the third, ghostly, quarry lake with its creeper clad cliffs, fernery and surrounding bamboos. The first lake is in view when you walk out of the walled garden past the thatched tea-room, and sits at the top of the small valley. The reason for the simple planting is to preserve the peaceful open setting. In early summer the Magnolia JC Williams is in full flower, the hellebores are still in bloom in the valley, as is Magnolia David Clulow. The Narcissus "Ice Follies" undercapeting the silver birch wood are also in full flower. The area was colour coordinated by Mrs Nathan, with most of the flowers and vegetables in shades of pink, burgundy and plum. A new thatched propagating house was built in 2007, as well as a plant sales area. This part of the garden enjoys a micro climate from the ancient stone walls and is able to grow many interesting fruits. 'Step-over', Comice and Conference pears line the walkways, their white blossoms appearing in spring. By late summer the fruits are lushly ripening. Espaliers of cherries drip off the walls and strawberries flourish in the raised, slate-walled beds. New Dawn roses blanket the west facing wall and flower for most of the summer. Large pots spill with rhubarb in spring. Swiss chard is grown in abundance, both for colour and eating. Varieties of lettuce, carrots, and many herbs are planted annually. Each year the Potager displays a colourful orchestration, with annual variety and timing differences. Bonython, but instead of building one which would have been difficult to achieve, I thought of growing a green yew chapel as a feature in the garden. Now after many years of the yew growing, we have achieved the buttresses, chapel windows, the ivy seats and succulents as hassocks. The altar is fully grown from Lonicera hedge and the cross is made from a combination of bamboo and cypress. We had an area where a lot of trees had fallen down and was extremely boggy as the water ran through it to the first lake. We went on a clearing campaign and channelled the water into a stream and then planted tree ferns on one side. These will be the fernery as I am slowly under planting the tree ferns with specimen small growing ferns. The bamboos are all new and feature on the other side of the stream. Eighteenth century alterations replaced the old stone mullion windows with ‘then modern’ sash windows. Very little remains of the 16 th century building, though the substantial kitchen boasts at least 3 open hearths and a bread oven, indicating the scale of the establishment and the numbers needing to be fed! The basement includes a seventeenth century cellar complete with contemporary wine bins. For most of the Victorian period the house was unoccupied.
