The Bonython Estate has evidence of residential occupation for over 1000 years! The original Manor Farmhouse, at the centre of the estate, is one of the earliest surviving buildings, with the central part revealing remains of a 13th century dwelling.
Much altered over the centuries, with additions and enlargements reflecting periods of increasing prosperity, followed by long periods of neglect. The present Farmhouse has been completely renovated, modernized and restored in the last 5 years in what would appear to be a “hundred year renovation”, which has happened in each of the last five centuries!
It now contains 5 individual
bedrooms and bath/shower rooms, all en-suite, one on the ground floor and
the others in two groups of two, each accessed by a separate staircase.
This makes
it ideal for large families or families sharing.
The situation of the Manor Farmhouse is incomparable, in a quiet sheltered part of the estate, largely protected from the force of prevailing wind and surrounded by its own acre of garden with distant views in all directions across estate farmland.
Ancient walls and hedgerows give privacy to enjoy the garden. Whether for playing, barbecuing or simply relaxing there is plenty of room for all the guests [maximum ten] to find their own space.
Indoors the spacious and renovated rooms provide tasteful and relaxing accommodation. With a large sitting room, separate dining room, family room and farm kitchen and utility area; two televisions, DVD players, a telephone and outside a laundry and boot store for wet clothing and muddy shoes!
Each of the five bedrooms is decorated in individual style with light, airy rooms and high ceilings open to the ancient rafters. Equipped with luxurious linen, cotton sheets and duvets, super-king size beds – the whole has been awarded 5-star status by the Cornish Tourist Board. Modern appliances - including 3 ovens, an American fridge freezer with ice maker, microwave, washing machine and tumble dryer - and cutlery, crockery, glassware and equipment to cater for 20 people - so guests can visit!
The ancient stones have been cleaned and re-pointed [both inside and out] and whilst heating has been installed and updated with full central heating and under-floor heating downstairs, the original fireplaces have been opened and retained in most rooms , with working wood burning stoves in the two main reception areas.
A Farmhouse that has grown and adapted over centuries retains a special timeless quality that engenders peacefulness in a way no modern building can. Combine this with the many beauties of the Bonython Estate, [for example guests have access at any time to the famous Estate gardens] and the magical delights of The Lizard peninsula, and it is no surprise that many return from year to year.
As a way to visit Cornwall this is one of the best! Un-spoilt scenery a short drive in all directions, with spectacular walks on both cliffs and inland valleys, fishing villages and a coastline with coves and beaches; that is amongst the finest of National Trust areas and with the Lizard National Park on the doorstep!
Cornwall is well established in the hearts and minds of most English people and many, from other countries, as well! It represents a part of us, linked to ancient times by ties of history and nature – something lost in frenetic modern life. Bonython Manor Farmhouse is the perfect place to recapture quality time with family and friends and realize the ‘magic of Cornwall’ for a life changing experience. Southern Cornwall retains privacy and quiet places, even in the height of the summer season. Nestling in complete rural isolation, yet still close to towns and amenities, this is a rare opportunity to experience a lifestyle that, for many, is an impossible dream.
